Considering how hard they are to find in the United States, buying an emu is sure to cost a lot. But exactly how much does an emu cost? Let us see.

How much do emus cost?

The cost of emus varies depending primarily on age. But breeding status may also affect how much you spend on an emu.

Generally, younger emus are cheaper than older ones. For instance, a one- to seven-day-old chick would cost around $1000. But a sexed pair of yearlings can go for up to $19,000.

The rest of this article gives you a more thorough analysis of the cost of emus. Besides that, we also mention places where you can buy emus.

How Much Do Emus Cost?

As we already stated, the cost of emus goes higher as they grow older. So, if you are looking to get an emu for cheap, opt for juvenile ones.

Emu chicks that are 7 days old or less typically go for around $1000. However, they are pretty rare to find.

When emu chicks become about 3 to 4 months old, their price shoots up to $3000 to $5000. These are not as hard to find as 7-day-old-chicks, but they are not common either.

Between ages 1 and 2, you may have to pay around $10,000 to $20,000 for a sexed emu pair. For a single yearling emu, you would be paying about $5000 to $10,000.

At age 2 and beyond, a sexed emu pair will cost more than a sexed yearling emu pair. So, prepare to pay around $25,000 or more for one pair.

Since 2-year-old sexed emu pairs cost around $25,000, a single emu of the same age would cost at least $12,500.

For a breeding pair with a proven and prolific production rate, you may spend over $30,000. Emus typically lay 30 eggs per season. So, a proven emu breeding pair should produce 30 eggs or more each season. If you want to learn more about emus laying eggs, you can check this article.

Interestingly, in some countries outside the United States, the cost of emus is much lower. But since emus are very rare in the US, the steep prices are not too shocking.

Average Cost of Emus by Age

Emu AgeAverage Cost
1 to 7 days old$1000

Sexed Yearling Pair$10,000-$20,000
At least 2 years old$25,000

How Much Do Emu Eggs Cost?

The cost of an emu egg depends on its fertility. While an infertile emu egg will cost about $30 to $50, a fertile egg will cost about $100.
